Mindfulness and work based well-being sessions
'Mindfulness' it seems that word is everywhere nowadays, the next big thing.....actually, the use of mindfulness as a way to reconnect to our happiness has been around for a long time. Marcus Aurelius (yes, the Roman gladiator born 121 AD) said
"when you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love"
More recently the amazing work of Jon Kabat-Zinn on using mindfulness to manage stress, pain and illness, and of course Thich Naht Hanh....
"Life is a miracle and being aware of simply this can already make us very happy"
echo this, we have all we need, we just need to learn how to reconnect with it
So what is Mindfulness exactly?
These quotes above show us that mindfulness is just being present in the moment. It is the practice of eliberately focussing ones attention on the prsent moment, exactly as it is, and accepting it without judgement.
"Mindfulness and awareness is the bridge between reaction and conscious choice.”
― Hal Tipper
So how come we are hearing so much about mindfulness now?
Our lives have become more and more fast paced, we multi-task, our mind is already in a meeting whilst we are still in the shower, we dwell on the past, or worry about the future whilst we complete our daily tasks, we are living in an amazing age where we are connected 24/7, we have technology at our bedsides.....and we are becoming more and more stressed and unable to unwind and unplug from it. Mindfulness offers us a way to reconnect to ourselves, to reclaim moments of peace in our hectic days, without needing to throw away all of the advances. No need to wait for the ideal situation/moment to start to feel better, mindfulness is about living in the now, that is what we have.
Mindfulness training will give you simple techniques that you can incorporate into your day, and share with your family and loved ones. There is so much interest that we are starting to see many research studies to back up what has been long known, even in Roman times!!
The benefits?
Improved concentration
enhanced wellbeing and a sense of peace and calm
Increased levels of happiness
Decrease in anxiety
Better sleep, which in turn helps most things!
Improved relationships and communication
Lower blood pressure
improved eating habits
Less need to rely on external modifiers to improve mood - alcohol, comfort eating, medication
Mindfulness can really help us in our relationships and with our thoughts and emotions, helping us understand ourselves, be kinder to ourselves and feel more fulfilled and happier
Sounds good! How do I do it?
Mindfulness is very easy to get started with, the exercises are simple enough to do. Like all new skills it just takes some commitment and practice to master it and stick with it. To start with, most people find it easier to take some lessons or join a group in order to support this learning and help to find the motivation to make it a daily habit.
For a quick mindfulness experience, stop right now and exhale deeply, breathe in again noticing the air rushing in at your nostrils, and the chest rising, breathe out again, feeling the chest fall and the air again at your nose. take another couple of breaths, focussing all of your attention on your breathing, as if it were the most important thing in the world (well it is quite high up there!) and then carry on.
One to one sessions are available if you are not keen on a group setting. I have had many years of experience seeing clients on a one to one basis.
I also deliver well-being and mindfulness sessions in work place settings, either face to face or virtual. Get in touch to discuss your needs. These sessions are a valuable way to support groups of staff to reflect upon their work, to learn ways to manage stress, to change perspective, to feel more positive and to enjoy better communication.
A recent one to one mindfulness client reported, that for the first time in her life, she feels happy with herself, something she hadn't thought possible....how priceless is that?
